Charcoal
The first time I was introduced to charcoal negative drawing, I fell in love. Rather than adding to a white page, you take away from a black page. The texture of charcoal is soft and therefore well-suited for animal hair/fur and human skin.
Behind the Scenes!
Creating a likeness of a loved pet in charcoal can be very challenging. It's messy work and it takes time and sometimes multiple attempts at a start to get it just right.
The nature of charcoal favors animals with darker fur as the method used is a subtractive method. That means I start by covering the entire paper in coating of charcoal. After that is done, I can start drawing using various eraser tools.
I have included the photos I was provided for some of the commissioned art works I have created.
